Michael Pollan’s latest

December 16, 2007

Here’s another great piece to read on a cold, snowy day. Michael Pollan’s latest is a beautifully constructed synthesis of the meaning of two bad things that happened this year: Bee Colony Collapse Disorder and community-acquired Multiple Resistance Staphylococcus aureus. Both, he shows, are the result of industrialized agriculture. Bees are migratory workers? No wonder they are stressed. The question, Pollan says, is “not whether systems this brittle will break down, but when and how.” Read it and get busy.

  2. Having just finished our first swine-specific course in vet school, I applaud Michael Pollan’s effort to draw attention to swine industry. We need more people questioning the industry and insisting that there must be a better, safer way to raise food animals that has both animal welfare and public health benefits.

Any idea how the food animal industry in Europe has responded to the restrictions on antibiotic use?

  3. Yes, an excellent article.

I was so surprised to see that bees are fed Chinese pollen and high fructose corn syrup; no wonder they’re dying off. Seriously, this is such complete insanity - I can’t help but think that California should ban the farming of almonds - we just don’t need them at this crazy cost!
