New York City tries calorie labeling again

January 22, 2008

As of March 31, the NYC Health Department will require chain restaurants with more than 15 outlets to prominently display calorie information. I can’t wait to see how this will look and whether it will have any effect. Stay tuned!  And check “calorie labels” to see previous posts on the history of this decision.

  3. I’m not sure if I read about this in “Food Politics” or not, but it didn’t seem to help the customers at Subway Restaurant though they were informed on napkins, in ads, etc., many people polled still didn’t understand what the numbers meant or have a good estimate of the calories they were consuming. If people think they did a ‘good job’ and ate a somewhat healthy lunch, low in saturated/trans fat and calories, then there are those cookies that might not be included into the total.
If this practice isn’t too restrictive on the small business owner (such as mandated for 15+ locations) then I bet *as long as the portion sizes listed on this board are REALISTIC, not confusing, it will help some people, especially those who choose not to pack their own, leaving their food prep in the hands of others, eating at restaurants very frequently.
Though the calorie listings may be helpful for some, it would be super to see amounts of:
Saturated fat(and that aweful trans-fat, for places who haven’t yet banned its use) and
    Added Sugars.
