Pet food recall settlement: $24 million

May 24, 2008

The class action lawsuits filed as a result of the pet food recalls last year are inching toward settlement. A judge in New Jersey consolidated 120 cases and awarded the plaintiffs $24 million to cover documented expenses related to the illness, death, or burial of their dogs and cats. But what about for emotional damages? The answer is uncertain and probably won’t be known until the settlement wends its way through the U.S. and Canadian courts, which still have to approve the whole thing.

I’m happy that the announcement came when it did because my book on the recall goes to press next week and I got to squeeze in a last entry to my timeline of the events: “May 22: Menu Foods settles class-action lawsuits for $24 million.”

And here’s a video report on how the recalls affected pet owners.   And here’s another one.

  2. Of this 24 million, how much goes to the lawyers and how much is left to help pay the medical bills for the dead pets?

  3. My cat became sick from the food . when this all first came out and I figured out that’s how my cat got sick I went to a web site and reported the incident. I then spoke to someone who told me to hang on to all the vet bills. after that I heard nothing till now. How do I find out if I’m part of the lawsuit and who do I send the bills to for reimbrusement…. thanks for any help you could give me

  4. The case isn’t really settled yet. It still has to be approved by courts in the U.S. and Canada. When it is, there will be plenty of public announcements about how to apply. I’ll be sure to explain when the time comes. Watch for announcements and hang onto those receipts. The settlement won’t make your cat better but it might help a bit. Thanks for asking.

  5. My cat ate NUTRO Natural Choice wet food on the pouches. He is 11 years old. He became ill and has been diagnosed with chonic kidney failure. The vet said there is no way a cat at this age would have kidneys as bad as his are.

He is very ill. How do I join the class action law suit to get funds to help with his medical bills?

Thank you very much. I really need help.

  6. Sorry to hear about your cat. Click on Pet Food on the “cloud,” the list of words on the right side of the site. The entry for June 17 links to instructions for filing a claim. Good luck with it!
